Lazy Summer Days, Hot Summer Nights

leave a comment »

After a terribly cold and rainy couple of days, today is hot and sunny as the gods smile down upon us to have this toga party. This week’s post for Hercules Attack (Wednesday June 3 at Van Gogh’s) is an ode to the summer to be. These songs pretty much scream summer.

You guys can just copy paste these names into hype machine. I didn’t have time to upload them this time and they’re all easily searchable, I checked.

For the day:

Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band – Sunshowers (Rico Uno & Kutcorners Drum Edit)

Frankie Valli – Beggin’ (Pilooski remix)

The Juan MacLean – One Day

Chemical Brothers – Life is Sweet (Daft Punk remix)

Jak-Z & Scott Cooper – Move Ya (HiJack remix)

Cut Copy – Far Away (Hercules and Love Affair remix)

Sebastien Tellier – Roche (Breakbot remix)

For the night:

The Juan MacLean – One Day (Surkin remix)

Major Lazer – Pon de Floor How I Like It (BeatauCue remix)

La Roux – Bulletproof  (Foamo’s dubstep remix)

Radioclit – Secousse (Paul Devro remix)

DJ Mujava – Township Funk (Diplo remix)

Project Bassline – Drop The Pressure (Jack Beats Remix)

See you guys tonight!

Zombie Attack goodies!!

leave a comment »

Always remember to keep hydrated

Tonight is Zombie Attack. I hope to see all yall $$ggas out tonight! I’m getting my pregame on, making chili with Paul (who will be DJing with me and Mr. Tron next week at Twister Attack!), listening to the soon to be hotness of tonight’s festivities.

UPDATE: A glass lid sitting on one of the burners just exploded in our kitchen! I hope I don’t eat glass…

First off is an Aaron LaCrate and Debonair Samir’s remix of Madonna’s Miles Away. This is pure fire at the 1:16 mark:

Miles Away – Madonna (Aaron LaCrate and Debonair Samir remix)

Toronto DJ duo Mansion is blowing up right now. I love their remix of Bounce:

Bounce – MSTRKRFT (Mansion remix)

Bird Peterson is a name you should all get familiar with:

Jump Off – Wu Tang Clan (Bird Peterson remix)

The Teenagers are BACK in form. Their new Au Revoir Simone remix is dope:

Shadows – Au Revoir Simone (The Teenagers remix)

Minimal is a little too boring sparse for my 5-year old sensibilities. Thankfully, this remix adds so many layers (like Rachel’s delicious ground beef, strawberry jam, cream and chocolate cake on Friends) it just sounds like regular old house music:

Keep It Real -  HiJack ( Oliver$ remix)

Finally, some good dubstep:

Eurovision – Zombie Disco Squad (Boog A Loo Crew remix)

One more thing, this is an old mashup I did but fitting for tonight’s theme:

The Cheese is Amazing – Kanye vs Deadmau5 mashup

See you guys tonight!

Really feeling this mix right now. It sounds like an amazing dance night at some South African dive bar in a township in Jo’Burg where everyone is bumping and grinding and beers cost 50 cents.

I wanna give you a handjob, with my mouth

Kari Ferell, The Hipster Grifter (aka Korean Abdul Jabar), is a scam artist that is setting the New York blogosphere on fire. She conned Vice Magazine into giving her a job (which she used to get free tix, bar tabs and restaurant reservations), and got into a whole bunch of other shenanigans. New York Observer has a great article detailing her trek:

It’s likely that when Kari Ferrell walked into the Vice magazine offices in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, last month to interview for an administrative assistant job, they thought they’d hit the jackpot. Ms. Ferrell—petite, 22 years old, of Korean heritage—had a huge tattoo of a phoenix across her chest and a cute pixie haircut. She was talkative, funny, charming, adorable. She had a tattoo on her back that read “I Love Beards.”

Read her story here.

Like a true serial thriller, the web is getting peppered with various accounts of encouters with the Hipster Grifter, they’re all great reads. Here’s a couple.

Pirates on Craigslist:

Being new to New York, I decided to post a personals ad on Craigslist pretending to be an unemployed pirate looking for a three-eyed hipster girl (glasses plus eye patch = three eyes) [read the ad here - Tim]. I wrote it with a mixture of sincerity and ludicrousness, with the secret hope that someone interesting and attractive might actually come across it and respond.

On and off lung cancer:

I knew Kari. I met her at the same party where she made the mini sex cops video. She and I were both friends with Josh Heller, the maker of the video. I saw her again a couple days later and mentioned that I was looking for work. She told me there was an opening where she worked at Goldenvoice and that she could get me an interview. I hung out with her a few times as I waited for the interview. She told me about the cancer, and an ex boyfriend, stabbing her. One time she called me saying she was coughing blood and I said I would take her to the hospital. When I got to her house she showed me a bloody napkin. I took her to Bellvue where she told them she had cancer and was in a lot o pain. They admited her and I visited her the next day. A doctor came in and said they couldn’t find anything wrong with her, they didn’t check for cancer, they just believed what she told them.

Kari Ferrell writes to a well wisher:

Yes, I made mistakes and yes, I hurt people who cared for me (and vice versa). However, I have made amends with most of those individuals, and have attempted to rectify my poor decisions by paying them back. I know that it is neither here nor there, but what the article didn’t mention is that I haven’t done anything of that nature for years. I understand that that, in no way, justifies what I did … but I definitely recognize that what I did was really REALLY shitty, and like to think that I have learned from my mistakes.

So gutter

leave a comment »

I’m writing my before last exam of undergrad tomorrow and as such, am very nostalgic these days.  Aaron LaCrate’s gutter remix of Smile (2006?) is one of the first tracks that got me back into dance/electro/club music. I was just watching this on YouTube and got shell shock again. So let’s go back to a simpler time before Steve Aoki and WARP, before Ed Banger fluo-tweens and before ummm…uhh…enjoy:

How to become as rich as Bill Gates

A great article on Bill Gates’ success which quicly veers out to inhereted wealth, venture capitalism, the 80’s stock market bubble, dumb engineers and Jack Welsch.

A young man asked an old rich man how he made his money. The old guy fingered his worsted wool vest and said, “Well, son, it was 1932. The depth of the Great Depression. I was down to my last nickel. I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day polishing the apple and, at the end of the day, I sold the apple for ten cents. The next morning, I invested those ten cents in two apples. I spent the entire day polishing them and sold them at 5 pm for 20 cents. I continued this system for a month, by the end of which I’d accumulated a fortune of $1.37. Then my wife’s father died and left us two million dollars.”

Let’s fight aids this friday night!

leave a comment »

I saw this online and thought it was really clever (the CAC 40 is the French Dow Jones and the red line show people living with HIV/AIDS) and totally not a huge over dramatic bummer like most AIDS NGO ads:

sidaction

Then I got inspired. What if we could fight AIDS, with dance music. We’re not raising money because money can’t buy happiness. We’re raising hope. If we just cured one person Friday night, wouldn’t that be worth it?

So this Friday night, at the Albion, we are throwing the biggest anti-aids dance party ever:

We Don’t Play Guitars

We’ve got a lineup even Queen West West / Parkdale / College West / Rexdale (ok, maybe Rexdale) couldn’t handle:

Gosh Damn DJ’s

Team Power

Sonny Crockett (The real deal!!)

Tigre$$$

and New Jack Fucking City!!!!!!!!

No cover, starts at ten. Here’s the flyer:
